Hreflang is an HTML attribute that tells search engines which language and regional version of a page to show to users in different locations. It is implemented using rel="alternate" hreflang="x" tags in the page head or in the sitemap.

Without hreflang tags, Google may show the wrong language version of your page to users in different countries, or flag your multilingual pages as duplicate content. Correct implementation ensures each audience sees the version intended for them.
